Carb tuning?

Carb tuning?

Postby scorcher148 on Tue Sep 30, 2008 7:08 pm

OK, so I have this little slut 4 wheeler (94 timberwolf 250 4x4). It's been around you could say but is in pretty good condition for being 15yrs old. It has been stored inside it's entire life, however, it sat up a few years before I ended up with her. I cleaned the carb as best I could, it was a total nastey, crusty, crappy disaster. I threw a little TLC at her and took her out to Busco a few time before stripping out the right rear hub splines. Being that it was an extra machine she sat up for at least another year until I finally picked up another hub and got serious about getting her back on the trails. After messing with the old carb a while I decided it would be better to just buy another used carb off ebay. The carb seems good and the power is surprising for a little 250, however the f'n thing will not idle correctly. It either idles right or to high until you hit the gas then it will idle down, get rough and usually die withn 15 secs. It will stumble slightly when you hit the throttle then pull pull the front wheels off the ground (literally) and run hard as long as the RPMs are up. The carb is clean inside and out. I've messed with the pilot and idle an still can't get it right. The motor sounds good and it doesn't smoke or smell abnormal. Does anyone know about these things that can help me out? Thanks

My little brothers does the same thing. The boot that ties the carb to the intake is dry rotted and sucking air. Check for air leaks somewhere that would be a start. If you can't figure it out I live across from Casey, you could bring it over one night and I'd help you figure it out.

I'll check that boot again. I made an attempt to take it off to see if maybe a seal dry rotted or something, but the bolts were pretty frozen and I didn't want to risk stripping the allen head bolts just to "see". I'll prolly mess with it next week when not so much is going on around here. I'll get up with you then.

check the vent lines on the carb too. just pull the end of the line off where it connects to the carb and try to blow through it. if you can blow its clear, if not it has something blocking it. if the vent line is blocked your machine will not idle or run very well.

Hey Charlie, let me know if you're still willing to get together on his thing and when. Other then this issue I think it is a good quad and worth fixing. Tues. & Sat. evenings are best for me since I don't work Wed. or Sun. and get up\go to bed early on the other days.
